The years that shape everything after.

ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ।

Learning is worthwhile when it is used for the good of others.

An English medium school in Phagwara for children from two years of age to Class V, built on small classes, teachers who stay, and a routine that lets a child feel safe enough to be curious.

From the Principal

A word of welcome

A school for young children is judged by small things. Whether a child walks in willingly on a Monday morning. Whether a teacher notices the one who is quiet today. Whether a parent can telephone and get a straight answer.

We have kept our classes small on purpose, so that every child here is known by name and by nature. We would rather teach fewer children well than many children in a hurry.

You are welcome to visit us on any working morning and see for yourself.

The Principal of Gurprasad Public School

Academics

Two stages, taken one step at a time

Children move at the pace of the group they are in. No child is hurried forward, and no child is left behind.

Two to five years

Pre-Primary

Play Way, Nursery and Kindergarten. At this age the hands teach the mind, so blocks, sand, song and story do the work that a textbook does later.

  • A settling week with a parent present
  • Rhymes, songs and finger play
  • Colours, shapes, sounds and early letters
  • Drawing, clay and free art
  • Patient help with toilet training
  • Outdoor play every day

Six to eleven years

Classes I to V

The primary years, where reading, writing and number sense are built properly. We would rather a child understands a thing than memorises it, so we go slowly where it matters.

  • English, Punjabi and Hindi
  • Mathematics and Environmental Studies
  • Gurmukhi reading and writing
  • Sikh history and shabad singing
  • Computer basics
  • Art, craft and music
  • Physical education and games
  • Regular written work, corrected and returned

The school day

A day at Gurprashad

A predictable rhythm is what allows a young child to feel secure. Ours runs the same way every day.

Assembly

The whole school together for Mool Mantar and Ardas, the day’s announcements and a thought to carry.

First lessons

The subjects that need a fresh mind come first, in short periods with movement in between.

Break

Hands washed, tiffin shared, and then out to the ground to run.

Second lessons

Written work, reading practice and activity periods through the later morning.

Home time

Diaries checked, bags packed, and handover to a named adult only.

Our foundation

Three principles we teach by

The school takes its name and its bearing from Sikh teaching. We do not teach these as a subject. We try to show them in how the school is run, and hope the children carry them out of the gate.

ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ

Naam Japna

A still moment each morning. Assembly begins with Mool Mantar and Ardas, and children learn that the day starts with gratitude rather than hurry.

ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਨੀ

Kirat Karni

Honest work, done properly. Homework finished, a task completed, a mistake owned. Effort matters here more than marks do.

ਵੰਡ ਛਕਣਾ

Vand Chhakna

Sharing, and seva. Children share tiffin, help the younger ones, and take part in what the school does for the community around it.

Facilities

What the school provides

Airy classrooms

Well lit, well ventilated rooms with furniture sized for young children.

Library

Picture books for the little ones and early readers for the primary classes.

Computer room

Enough machines that every child in a class gets time on one.

Playground

Open ground and safe play equipment, used every single day.

Transport

School vans covering [areas served], with an attendant on every route.

Activity room

For art, craft, music and the practice that goes into annual day.

Our assurances

The questions parents ask us first

You are leaving your child in our care. These are the answers we offer before anyone has to ask for them.

  • Handover to named adults onlyA child leaves with the people you have listed with us, and with nobody else.
  • Cameras throughoutClassrooms, corridors and the playground are all covered.
  • Female staff for the little onesIncluding all help with the washroom and with changing.
  • Clean water and washroomsChecked and cleaned through the day, not once in the morning.
  • First aid on the premisesTrained staff, a stocked kit, and a telephone call to you for anything beyond a scrape.
  • Visit on any working dayNo appointment is needed. A school that hides itself is a school worth worrying about.
